Fire Extinguishers

The training consist of hands on experience using the fire extinguisher and its capability.
Portable fire extinguishers are used to contain or put out a small fire until the Fire Department arrives.

Fire extinguisher training classes are available through the Safety Department upon request for Faculty, Staff, and Student Program. Persons requesting the training can call the Safety Department at Extension 4205.  

TYPE OF FIRES

There are four general categories of fires depending on the types of materials or fuels involved. All fire extinguishers are identified with common symbols to indicate on which fire they are most effective.

Class A Fires

Class A fires involve ordinary combustible materials such as wood, paper, rags, rubbish and other solids.

Class B Fires

Class B fires occur in the vapor/air mixture over the surface of flammable and combustible liquids such as gasoline, oil , paint thinner, cleaning solvents and other hydrocarbon fuels.

Class C Fires

Class C fires involve any type of energized electrical equipment.

Class D Fires

Class D fires involve combustible metals such as magnesium.

  • P- Pull the pin
  • A- Aim the nozzle(hose) at the base of the fire
  • S- Squeeze the handle
  • S- Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire
