NURSE ASSISTANT

Nurse Assistants are trained healthcare professionals that assist the licensed nurse in caring for patients. Nurse Assistants are sometimes called orderlies, nurse aides or CNA's. The primary responsibility of a Nurse Assistant is to provide basic bedside care, such as personal hygiene, making beds, taking vital signs, assisting in feeding, serving trays, answering call lights and ambulating patients. The Nurse Assistant can work in a variety of health care settings such as hospitals, long term care centers, rehabilitation centers, clinics, and home health agencies. The Nurse Assistant is also trained to help patients with attaining and maintaining independance, and with psychosocial and emotional needs.

Nurse Assistant students at Texas State Technical College participate in clinical rotations at local hospitals, and  long term care centers.  After successfully completing the TDHS requirements for state registry students are eligible to take the state skills and written exam to become a Certified Nurse Assistant in the state of Texas.
