Computer Drafting & Design Technology

A Computer Drafting technician works with designers and engineers to convert their ideas and concepts for new products and designs into accurate drawings that specify size, shape, materials and specifications. These drawings are then used by professionals in manufacturing, consulting, and construction to produce the desired product or structure. Designs are created using computer aided drafting (CAD) equipment. Solid modeling and parametric concepts are introduced and utilized early in the program and throughout the curriculum.

The job outlook is very good for CAD program graduates with computer aided design skills. CAD is an emerging technology and entry level CAD positions are available wherever manufacturing, consulting, or construction is taking place.  Women who enroll in the Computer Drafting Program are eligible for special support services and assistance.  Women should contact the special support services department at 1-800-852-8784 ext.4524.

The Computer Drafting and Design Technology program at Texas State Technical College Harlingen is totally CAD based. The program has one of the best equipped CAD labs in Texas with over 100 design workstations utilizing several design software programs such as Pro Engineer Wildfire, AutoCAD, 3D Studio VIZ,  AutoDesk Land Development, and  Architectural Desktop.  The department maintains an open-lab policy that allows students ample computer time to complete assignments and design projects.

Although not a necessary requirement, taking drafting and art classes in high school is very helpful. Of course, all the math and science courses a student can take will provide a strong background when earning a technical degree.

Entry level salaries for graduates of the Computer Drafting and Design program range from $25,000 to $30,000 annually. Currently, entry-level jobs are in demand. Upon graduation, you will receive an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Computer Drafting and Design Technology.
