The Developmental English Department supports Texas State Technical College Harlingen's academic and technical programs by assisting students in improving their reading and writing competence. To do so, the Developmental English Department provides quality remedial didactic and laboratory instruction in reading and writing to all students in need of basic skills in preparation for college-level course work. Faculty and laboratory assistants maintain the highest standards while working diligently with students to deliver this instruction.

A Quick Review course for Reading and Writing was designed as an intensive one-week review designed to accelerate students through their developmental sequence.   

To assist students in meeting their goals, the Developmental English Department has adopted the National Association for Developmental Studies' goals for developmental education:

• To preserve and make possible educational opportunity for each postsecondary learner.
• To develop in each learner the skills and attitudes necessary for the attainment of academic career and life goals.
• To ensure proper placement by assessing each learner's level of preparedness for college course work.
• To maintain academic standards by enabling learners to acquire competencies needed for success in mainstream college courses.
• To enhance the retention of students.
• To promote the continued development and application of cognitive and affective learning theory.
